There's a good marker, though one that may need updating in the near future. If we move to all-electric vehicles, you might have to say "a man who drives without gears or brakes" - the electric equivalent of manual. That is, there is only a pedal or joystick to indicate how much power to add to the motor. When the pedal is at 0, the motor wouldn't turn. This way you can control your acceleration with one input, acting as a brake when slowing down.
